Red Square and the Kremlin

In depth·Moscow

The Kremlin’s cathedrals and the Armoury, St Basil’s and Red Square, GUM and the State Historical Museum: the heart of Moscow, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Kremlin and Red Square are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Inside the red-brick walls stand the Cathedral Square churches, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Tsar Bell and the Tsar Cannon, and the Armoury Chamber with its treasures. On Red Square, the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, known as St Basil’s, faces the State Historical Museum, and GUM fills the long east side.

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin Museums (kreml.ru) run the Cathedral Square churches, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower and the Armoury Chamber.

Our advice: come early for the Kremlin, then walk out through the Alexander Garden to the Eternal Flame.
